William and Alice Dyer: Great, great, great grandparents
From Thomas Dyer and Hannah Gardner’s marriage certificate we know that Tomas’s father’s name was William.
A search of the Warwickshire Country Archive for Staffordshire revealed these entries in the baptism register:
1821 07 15 | Thomas William | William and Alice Dyer | Labourer
1823 09 28 | Elizabeth | William and Alice Dyer | Labourer
1830 12 05 | William | William and Alice Dyer | Boatman |
From this record a search on Ancestry for the census data revealed this:-
1841 William and Alice are living in Great William Street, Old Stratford with their children William and Eliza. Eliza, I assume, is the same as Elizabeth in the baptism register above. William’s trade is given as ‘Boatman’.
Great William Street still exists and crosses the canal is Stratford.
1851 Still in Great William Street. Birthplaces are given as Warwick for William (now aged 62), Stretton on Dunsmore, Warwickshire for Alice (now aged 72). William, their son is still living his parents. William’s occupation is given as ‘relief from Union Boatman – as is his wife and son.
The age gap is given as 10 years between William and his older wife.
Staying with the Dyers are Maria and Thomas Gardner – their grandchildren aged 10 and 3 respectively.
1861 William, Alice and William are now living in Shottery, Stratford on Avon. Their ages are given as 70, 80, and 30 respectively and occupation is ‘boatman’.
This is the last census data I can find for William and Alice – so presumably they died before the next census in 1871.
