A web log of my family history research

Gunnerside web links

There are some fantastic resources about Gunnerside on the web.  To read what is happening on the Census data Marion Hearfield has a wonderful website http://www.johnhearfield.com/Swale/USwD.htm This includes information about occupations, immigration and emigration, transport links…just fantastic. I have emailed her to say thank you. The site gives a superb feel for what it must […]

Meaning of the Family Name Meredith (ancestry.co.uk)

meredith Name Meaning and History Welsh: from the personal name Maredudd. In Welsh the stress is on the second syllable. The Old Welsh form is Morgetiud, of which the first element may mean ‘pomp, splendor’ and the second is iudd ‘lord’.

The Meredith Family Bible

In Fred’s possession is a family bible, printed in 1870 – although my reading of roman numerals isn’t the strongest. At the back of the bible is listed names of two generations of the Meredith family. The Edward referred is my grandfather (born 1876) and the first entry, Joseph Meredith (born 1840), is by great […]

…and now what was Isabella doing in 1881

Now I’ve returned to the 1881 census.  As noted previously Joseph doesn’t seem to appear on this census.  But a search for his wife Isabella reveals that she has moved to West Derby, Lancashire and is living at 106 Edge Lane. The census entry reads: Isabella Sunter, head, 31, Milk Dealer William Sunter, son, 9, scholar, […]

1861 Census Joseph Sunter

Forgive me whilst I jump around a bit here.  Stick with me and it will make sense. First of all in 1861 in the Hamlet of Lodge Green, Gunnerside, Melbecks (and each of these names are used to fill in census forms between 1841 and 1901) we have the following data: William Sunter, 37, head, […]
